It's the measurement system used for smaller sizes. It only goes up to 00. After that it is 1/2" my ears are 5/8".

Because hipsters. You can't use science on hipsters. It's too mainstream.
Hipster Joke Time:
Question : How many hipsters does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer : It's a really obscure number, you've probably never heard of it.

The holes in my ears predate the term hipster.

That's partly the reason why i think the actual term is stretching (and not gauging) within the body-mod community. It makes sense when you're thinking of the smaller jewelry sizes, but like you say stops fitting above 1/2". Never went larger than 14g personally, this is only my understanding from friends within that community. I've always heard larger jewelry referred to as plugs.

Most of the large jewelry are plugs but some of them are tunnels. I was serious about this stuff for awhile and was looking to open a piercing shop with some of my bros. That probably would have been a bad idea.

Tunnels (obviously for being hollow), that was the one i couldn't remember the name of. It can be a rough business unless you're killer at it. My first and only piercing (a lip piercing) was done at a local shop that everyone raved about. Months later i was at another shop to swap jewelry (a CBR and couldn't open it myself, initially) and the artist noticed how well it had healed and asked who's handiwork it was. She immediately recognized the shop and applauded my choice of shops. It's cool seeing how small that scene is and how interconnected everyone is. My friend who had brought me to her now works at a shop selling handcrafted jewelry for stretched individuals at onetribe.nu

Wow. They have some beautiful stuff. I'm a fan of wood jewelry.
You also need to be in a spot that has a good scene where people want piercings. Rural Maine is not the right place to open a piercing shop.

Why would I want socks that don't wear out? New socks are the best feeling ever!
